Project Eclipse: Nov 25 Update

So the gears are constantly switching, and our Car Club members are working strong, tackling many aspects of the Eclipse rebuild...
With students working over, under and, in the car at different times, we continued to remove some parts, while reconditioning others, and even adding a creative new part on. Keep reading...

Our bead blaster has been essential in reconditioning suspension parts all around the Eclipse. Grade 9 students blasted away the rust from the old front knuckle assemblies and repainted them to like new condition:

A couple of grade tens assessed the two rusted out body holes and began removing rust from their perimeter so we can later weld the holes shut before parts installation.

Our senior students began painting the drive shafts a deep red colour for contrast under the chassis while the front upper control arms are back from paint and ready to assemble after the welding is complete.

After a few setbacks with the front end, we were finally able to remove the front subframe from the Eclipse in order to rebuild it like we did the rear end. Detail is essential!

To get a head start on powertrain removal, other students began removing engine bay related parts, like the washer and antifreeze jugs and starter motor...

Now, its been to hard to keep secret, but our vertical door kit came in from California the other day, and students were eager to see it on the car...

...and with many able hands and great care, we removed the passenger side door to attempt a test fit of the lambo door conversion kit. The process was a good exercise in quality control and adaptiveness, as we learned we will need to perform slight modifications to the kit to ensure the best fit to the doors.

and after some fine tuning, we wrapped up this week's Car Club with one lambo door on the old Eclipse, so it could wave goodbye until next Tuesday!

Project Eclipse: Nov 18 Update

Seems like we are making progress and are starting to button up one area while we move to another for reconditioning.

We have our usual weekly list of objectives on the board and have taken attendance.

Now to get our hands dirty as automotive surgeons!

Some car club students are removing more front end suspension and drive line components like drive axles, control arms and knuckles...

Our grade 12 SHSM students helped to secure the final bits of the rear subframe and upper control arms so we could mount the tires and have a final look at the finished rear end. But while doing so, they spotted an excessively rusty rear bumper mount and decided we could discard it and weld a new one to remount the bumper skin later in the rebuild:

The grade nine car club members filled in for the grade tens and continued prepping the undercarriage for some undercoating, sometimes at strange heights and angles! Perseverance pays!

As the final bits of the rear suspension are bolted into place, we finish today's session with a test fit of the wheels for that complete look!
Not too bad!

BR rules!!!

We are eager to get the rest of the front end down and rebuilt as well as the remainder of the undercarriage undercoated. There is still lots to do- engine and transaxle removal, repairs to a few broken bolts, and we just received word that our custom lambo door kit is en route across the country with delivery any time now!
The BR Spirit Car is slowly coming together, and for what Car Club has in store for this transformation...will be well worth the wait!

Project Eclipse: Nov 11 Update

With another high attendance session, jobs were divided up amongst the members for our next steps in the Eclipse rebuild.
The main focus of tonight's session was to finally "marry" the subframe to the Eclipse body.
With fresh brake shoes and cables now installed in the rear end, we were ready for the installation process. We even saved a few bucks by reconditioning the old brake pads which were still within spec for operation:

Car club members also made the effort to repaint all four struts, install the lowering springs on the rear struts and repaint the rear calipers for that clean look.

With our dedicated body team tirelessly removing rust, the rear portion of the undercarriage is finally undercoated and ready for the subframe:

Since little details are important, we decided to have a little fun. To remember the shop's location in our school, we painted a cool little graphic onto the subframe cradle before it finds its home on the Eclipse:

And finally, it was time to join the subframe to the car!

While our team begins making all the necessary connections, other students begin to remove items like the A/C compressor and condenser, front engine cross member and other items...

Finally, the subframe is in place where it belongs, and looking pretty sharp!

As we cleaned up our tools, it was a pleasure to see another checkpoint reached on our Eclipse rebuid. It is thanks to the dedication of the many young men and ladies in our Car Club that make a difference in student success! Great job, students! Mr. Da Silva is proud of you all!

Project Eclipse: Nov 4 Update

Today's car club showed a peak in attendance, with nearly twenty students ready to work...

We had two main jobs on the go. One was to continue on Project Eclipse. The other, one of our senior students led a team of grade tens to remove the bumper and wheel wells on his VW in order to replace the original headlight lenses with a cooler darkened shade set...

It's great to see students who have taken auto in the prior years, pass on their knowledge and leadership to younger students.

The team working on the undercarriage agreed it would be vital to remove the rear bumper skin in order to access more of the vehicle for sanding and undercoating...

Now with a big group of grade nines and tens cleaning and prepping the underbody of the Eclipse, Mr. DaSilva showed the suspension team how to reassemble the painted subframe with new stabilizer end links... Then the team went to work reassembling all the arms, links, spindles, rotors etc...

With brake pads and cables on order, the rear end is virtually ready to be raised into place next week.

The old rear end...
is new again...
and ready to raise into place...

While two other students begin sanding the bumper skins for paintwork, the rear coil overs will be painted, reassembled and reinstalled at the rear of the Eclipse, followed by our rear subframe.

Next week: we finish the rear end suspension and move on to the front end suspension!
It's great to see results of quality work from our students...
Have a great week from Mr. DaSilva and the car club. We'll see you next week!
