Project Eclipse: Jan 6 Update

Happy New Year everyone! It's time to kick start the new year back on track with Project Eclipse.

With the powertrain out of the vehicle, car club students focussed on other details of the rebuild pertaining to the chassis and interior.

Mr. Da Silva helped a couple of students heat and extract several old broken bolts from the rear bumper cover bracket.

We also had a group of students remove unnecessary external components like the rear wiper transmission and washer bottle, and the radio antenna. Our super audio system will not need AM or FM frequencies!

At the opposite end of the vehicle, students began to apply some black paint to the engine bay area.

Now, inside the vehicle, we decided to remove the front seats, just to see if the bolts would come out. We are toying with the idea of replacing them with colour matched racing seats for a cooler look. We don't normally do this, but the bolts were stubborn, so we got out the BIG wrench to muscle out the seat bolts!

Back up front, we had our senior students remove the brackets for the Powertrain Control Module. We were going to attempt a relocation of the PCM to clean up the engine compartment, but the wiring harness is too short, so we will just clean and paint the computer's mount and reinstall the assembly. Also, buried nearby, we are removing the battery and transaxle mounts to be repainted and reinstalled.

As usual, hardware was reconditioned for installation into exterior body panels, like the rear bumper.

Now, all was going well, until we operated our vertical doors. Every rebuild has its share of problems, and admittedly, the Eclipse's vertical doors are VERY delicate and finicky. We noted some binding on one door, and traced it to improper torquing and lubrication on the main shock bolt. We fixed the problem, and now are moving on to test fitting the fenders. We've found that some minor cutting must be made to accommodate the small bulge of the shock's lower ball mount. No worries...the best part of a big job...is learning how to problem solve along the way!

Next week, we will continue solving small details and painting the engine bay, and prepping more body panels for reinstallation. Mr. Da Silva is very proud of everyone's efforts. As we head into semester two, we can expect a few more enlistments to Car Club. Soon we will be able to open the shop doors when spring arrives, and give the Eclipse a little sun before it's paint job!

See you soon!
