Always follow the auto shop safety rules and practices
Safety Rules:
1. Always be alert and think safety.
2. No horseplay at any time.
3. Students are NOT permitted to operate any equipment until they are given proper instructions. Read ALL safety rules and instructions regarding each machine and power tool.
4. Report ALL unsafe condition s to the instructor.
5. Report ALL accidents or injuries regardless of how minor.
6. Safety glasses must be worn at ALL times while working in the auto shop.
7. IF the instructor is not in the room, students MUST be in the seating area.
8. To prevent someone from slipping, clean up all spilled fluids IMMEDIATELY.
9. Compressed air may be lethal. NEVER blow compressed air at yourself or anyone else.
10. To prevent accidents, DO NOT wear loose clothing, ties, long sleeved shirts, unbuttoned coveralls or any jewellery. These items may get caught in machinery or rotating parts.
11. Machines and power tools MUST be UNPLUGGED before any cleaning, oiling or adjusting is done.
12.Guards and Safety devices on machinery MUST be in place at u TIMES.
13. Waste or oily rags MUST be placed in a C.S.A. approved container to prevent fires. (C.S.A. = Canadian Standards Association)
14. Good housekeeping prevents accidents and injuries.
15. Tools, machines, instruments and power tools in good working condition prevent accidents. IF any of these items are in poor condition or broken, please report to the instructor.
16. Carry ALL sharp edged tools or pointed pieces with the sharp end towards the floor.
17. Open toe footwear is NOT allowed in the transportation shop work area.
18. ALWAYS show your fellow students the RESPECT that you would expect yourself.
19. Music listening devices are NOT allowed in the transportation room.
20. After you have completed your work, you MUST clean up your work area, clean the tools and equipment you have used and return all items to the proper place.
GASOLINE
FIRE is always a constant threat to any automotive shop. Gasoline must be ALWAYS stored in a C.S.A. approved container. Gasoline spills MUST be cleaned up immediately and the cleaning cloths must be stored in a C.S.A. approved container.
EXHAUST FUMES
Exhaust fumes from an internal combustion engine contain CARBON MONOXIDE, which is a colourless, odorless and tasteless gas. These fumes are poisonous and may cause ASPHYXIATION or DEATH. ALWAYS hook upu the proper ventilation system before running an engine in the shop.
HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACKS
If it is necessary to lift a vehicle with a hydraulic jack, ALWAYS ensure that the jack is placed in the PROPER PLACE under the vehicle. Jack up the front of the vehicle first and then place the SAFETY STANDS in the proper location. Then jack up the rear and place the safety stands in the proper location. It is CRITICAL that the jack and safety stands are placed in the proper location or MAJOR DAMAGE may occur. ALWAYS ask for the instructor’s assistance. NOTE: These safety rules MUST be followed while you are a student in the transportation room. Failure to comply with these rules may lead to your dismissal from class.
HYRAULIC HOIST
When the hoist is to be used, EXTREME CARE must be used to ensure that the LIFTING PLATES are placed under the vehicle, to the manufacturer’s locations. Only ONE PERSON must set the lifting plates, to prevent the vehicle from falling or causing damage to the undercarriage. ALWAYS ensure that no other students are around the vehicle when it is going up or down. ALWAYS ensure that the SAFETY LOCK is operating properly. ALWAYS ask the instructor for assistance before raising the vehicle.
OILY CLOTHS
Oily cloths and wipes are a potential fire hazard and must be kept in a CSA approved container.
CLEANING EQUIPMENT
All cleaning materials and equipment MUST be LABELED and kept in a CSA approved cabinet. Protective clothing (rubber gloves, coveralls, face and eye protection) MUST be worn when working with cleaning materials.
BATTERIES
During the charging of a battery, it gives off gases which may cause it to EXPLODE when it is exposed to a spark. ALWAYS wear eye protection. Charge batteries in a well VENTILATED area. Wash IMMEDIATELY any part of the body or clothing that comes in contact with battery acid. ALWAYS obtain permission from the instructor before servicing or charging a battery.
STARTING A VEHICLE
The INSTRUCTOR will be the ONLY person to start any vehicles in the auto shop. Make sure no one stands IN FRONT or BEHIND a vehicle that is being started or is running.
IMPORTANT: If you are unsure of any procedure, ALWAYS ask the instructor.
